How to Delight Your Customers by Investing in the Environment

Can businesses do the RIGHT thing – and still prosper?  Absolutely!

My clients at The LUX* Collective have prioritized care for the environment in ALL their operations. And their efforts have only added to their success.

LUX* has launched initiatives to reduce waste, generate their own energy, support their local communities, and preserve the natural environment.

And because LUX* has a self-sustaining culture of SHINING service,

their local teams take the LEAD on many of these initiatives.

The results?

Thei teams are more engaged. The organization saves money AND resources, while serving their customers more creatively. And the world becomes a slight better place.

Watch the video to discover how LUX* does it!

Ron: There’s one word that you also speak about, which is the environment. Hospitality happens on the physical earth with human beings. Share with us some of that. What’s happening?

Paul:  We are following a number of practices that we can actually realize ourselves and can be measured. So food waste is one of them. That was started by the wonderful team at Le Morne. Food waste. In fact, they are upheld nationally as an example of how to control food waste. The output of food in any hotel can be wasteful. So what do you do with that food? So we set up a way of packaging any leftover food hygienically. And delivered to schools, to homes. It’s working extremely well.

Of course, there’s the whole energy cycle, clean energy, which we are transforming our hotels. It’s not instant. There is an investment, but we have objectives to reduce the burden on electricity grid through solar, through even, we have this with kite sales generating electricity, which we’re going to start in the Maldives, where, by the way, we’ve got one of the largest solar energy farms over water, which is fantastic.

That cut our diesel consumption in half. We think with the wind sails that we’ll be able to further reduce our dependency on diesel, which is great.

Ron: Then your single use plastics that long ago went away. But you’ve taken that even further now.

Paul: Yeah, single use plastics, I think are definitely a thing of the past and we’re definitely working on new ways of presenting what we need, what the guests need. We have the wonderful Evita, who is our Chief Sustainability Officer, who keeps us all honest, because, you know, I was reading, she measures, I was reading just today that Singapore is introducing legislation that will combat greenwashing, which is very new for a country.

I think Singapore, you know, I always talk about Singapore. I’m very proud to live in Singapore because I notice the greening of the city, it’s everywhere, vertically. You know, I live in an apartment building. I mean, it’s top to bottom trees, plants, creepers, you name it, walls of plants. In fact, you wouldn’t think of building anything high rise or low rise in Singapore without the aspect of landscaping.

I think it’s an example to the world. So Singapore takes it very, very seriously, I think is a good example.
