The Success Paradox Smart Leaders Must Avoid

https://RonKaufman.com/Subscribe

Most successful leaders are masters of execution. They optimize. They deliver. They succeed!

But in a world that’s evolving faster than ever, that’s no longer enough.

Organizations that consistently stay ahead have realized something counterintuitive: Mastering today’s success can actually limit tomorrow’s possibilities.

Which means leaders must be responsible for creating the conditions for success today AND tomorrow.

And that’s a different skillset than many leaders possess.

It’s no longer enough to be an exceptional manager. The most forward-thinking organizations are looking for leaders who can create what has never existed before.

These are the leaders who drive innovation, create unprecedented opportunities, and open new markets that redefine the future of their industry.

Becoming THAT kind of leader requires most people to make a SIGNIFICANT mindset shift.

I had a conversation yesterday with your CEO. And boy, did I get an earful of answer for this.

He said we need people who are willing to take a risk to try something new that had never done… that was never done before so that they could fail faster so they could try something else new that hasn’t been done. They can learn. They can apply what they learn. We need people who are visionary. We need people who are innovative. We need people who have the entrepreneurial spirit. We got to have that kind of a mindset. I said, “Oh, my God.”

So yes, you want to be operationally excellent. And you are. Yes, you want to be fast and efficient. And you are. Yes, you want to be profitable. But the mindset for the future is you can’t just be that brilliant manager/conductor. You’ve literally got to become the composer who’s willing to sometimes write some bad music so that you can discover that it’s bad. So you can quickly learn and adapt and adapt and adapt and adapt and adapt. I mean, think about that photograph that went from the first flight to landing on the moon in 66 years. Technology will fly, will you? That’s the mindset that we need.
